As a PhD student with 10 years of experience in teaching, from primary school to university level, I have found that my teaching is most successful when students are involved in helping direct lessons towards what they need. I always ask questions in order to understand the underlying challenges that students are facing - whether this be subject specific, concept specific, or to do with understanding their ways of learning. I generally try to ensure a variety of different approaches to teaching through different kinds of activities, and avoid lecturing in order to facilitate maximum engagement. Rather than focusing on memorisation and repetitive exercises, I tailor lessons to teach the same required content, but in ways that engage individual students depending on the ways of learning that seem to resonate with them the most. My lessons are planned in order to both cover content and to help facilitate deeper understandings of concepts, in order to helps students succeed in the long term.
My teaching approach comes from 10 years of teaching public speaking/debate, research, writing and critical thinking in schools across London and the North-East of England, as well as 1-1 tutoring experience, a placement as a primary school teaching assistant, and teaching positions at the University level (in Political Science). My approach is also informed by my understanding of learning, and my understanding of the social factors surrounding education, which comes from my experience as a PhD researcher at Columbia University in New York City, and my previous roles as a research assistant at an early learning and public health center in Chicago and at the Durham University school of Education.
