I begin by identifying where confidence drops. Sometimes it is essay structure, sometimes analysis, sometimes exam timing. From there, we build a clear plan.
A typical lesson combines three elements: skill development, guided practice and independent application. For example, we might break down a model paragraph to understand what earns top marks, then co-write a response together, before the student writes their own with targeted feedback. I focus heavily on helping students move from describing what happens to analysing how and why it matters.
For English Language, we practise precise techniques for creative and transactional writing, including tone, structure and persuasive devices. For Literature, we develop deeper interpretations, linking context, themes and writer’s methods without overcomplicating answers.
I also integrate exam strategy naturally into sessions, including timing, planning under pressure and understanding mark schemes. My background in copywriting strengthens how I teach clarity, argument flow and impactful phrasing. My experience supporting young people in wellbeing settings means I teach calmly and without judgement, which helps students feel safe to make mistakes and improve.
Above all, my aim is to replace confusion with structure. When students understand the “why” behind what they are writing, confidence follows, and so do the marks.
