I have been tutoring since 2001, predominantly among the varied population(s) of East London. I have been a professional author (as Tat Wood, I have 13 books to my name and many articles in textbooks and magazines). Before that, I did a number of jobs in several parts of the UK. I mainly teach English Literature and Language, up to A Level, and History; younger students can also have a wide range of other subjects. I have worked with adults, including recently-arrived Doctors needing a proficinecy test for NHS work.
I have recently returned to the UK after a decade in the US and a year in France. Since then I have been keeping abreast of changes in the curriculum requirements of the major exam boards. I am now based in Swansea and am working on my Welsh.
I generally helped my GCSE and A Level students to a higher grade than their school expected. My help was especially useful with excluded students.
My usual approach is one-to-one, asking my students what they know then connecting it to what they ought to know, responding to their needs by diagnosing their weak spots and finding what works for them. I've taught in classes, and got good results there, but conversation's more immediately helpful and has lasting effects.
