I used to ask about and see my student's capabilities and learning habits first to think creatively about how to implement the fittest teaching method. For example, in my previous experience, I had a student who failed one-course last year, and my student could only focus briefly. So, I used to have a slow pace of teaching and interacted a lot with her so that she wouldn't feel bored. Don't worry; we are still on track, and in the end, she got a final score of B+ in the university in Indonesia (around a scale of 76 to 79). You see, everybody has their way and pace, so as a tutor, I have to help them exploitative or even help them find their best way of studying.
Even though I am an easygoing person, I still want the best for my students, and that's why I am available to meet in person for tutoring for someone. It is hard to have a tutoring session online (that includes me). However, if you cannot meet in person, I will try to make it a creative teaching so that you won't quickly get bored (I'm a person who easily gets bored, especially during studying, so I'll make sure that it will be fun).
Finally, before the tutor day, it would be greatly appreciated if you could share the material (as early as possible will be advantageous, as I need to learn on my own first, and I'm not perfect either). However, if you ask me something on the tutor day and I can't answer, it will be homework because I will get in touch with you as soon as I get it. To conclude, teaching and learning are continuous processes; we will learn with me in a fun way.
