I usually encourage my students to describe in detail what they wish to achieve and what their personal goals are in terms of learning English.
Every student I've worked with has a different goal in mind as they're all learning English for a different reason. It's my job as the tutor to first properly understand what my student wants and needs and then make a plan that suits their requirements. Each lesson focuses on one of the things they would like to work on e.g speaking and listening, reading, writing, etc. My lessons largely include a lot of interactive activities and exercises so that students are fully engaged throughout the whole lesson. The pace and amount of content that is discussed in a lesson will be adjusted according to the student's feedback.
If it's kid's who will be learning with me then I'd be actively speaking to their parents in order to get a better idea as to what the kids require and what their specific learning styles are to better aide them in their process.
