My lessons are structured but relaxed, focusing on what the student needs most. I usually start by checking what they already understand, then explain topics clearly and step by step before practising together. I tailor lessons to each student’s learning style. For example, using PowerPoint slides, a whiteboard, or textbooks for visual and reading-based learners. I have experience supporting peers in school, and adults (doing resits and wanting help from an english-speaker for practice), and I focus on clear explanations, active participation, and building confidence. We also explore revision methods and exam techniques together to help them retain information and feel more prepared.
I also focus on setting clear goals with students so the lessons can be purposeful and progress is visible. There are a myriad of ways to do that so depending on the subject, it could be us; working through exam-style questions, revisiting tricky topics, or breaking down complex ideas into smaller, manageable steps. I encourage being comfortable with asking questions and making mistakes without pressure, as this is an important part of learning. Again, depending on the subject, lessons may include guided practice, discussion, recap activities, and short tasks to check understanding.
I also share simple revision tips, resources, and ways to stay organised that I’ve found helpful myself. Overall, I want lessons to feel encouraging and motivating, helping students build confidence as well as understanding. That way, they can succeed in their studies and also, just as important, have the capability to handle setback or failures.
