Having helped many previous students, I found that the most efficient way to help a student is to first ask or help them to found out what kind of learner they are. Doing so allows me to alter my approach according to the student's learning preference. I explain concepts thoroughly and slowly allowing time for my students to understand the questions, and if further guidance is needed, I will do so accordingly. After I have explained and made sure the student understands, I will normally ask them to try out some practise questions so I can see their progress and where they need help. I understand that different students learn in different ways, I am always willing to adjust my approach which suits best the needs for the student.
