Luan Shaw

Luan enjoys teaching children of all ages. She also specialises in teaching adult learners, including those returning to playing after a long break. Her lessons are fun, flexible and tailored to students' musical needs, interests and goals. She also offers mentoring for students undertaking teaching diplomas.

Luan’s teaching experience spans 30 years. In addition to her private teaching practice, she teaches at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire where she is Head of the Primary Winds Programme (recently shortlisted as a finalist in the 2027 Music and Drama Education Awards), and is a clarinet specialist at Services for Education's Sutton Coldfield Music School. She was formerly Head of Instrumental Studies at Hallfield School in Birmingham, in addition to holding numerous instrumental teaching positions in independent schools and music services, and training children's choirs and instrumental ensembles in her local community.

Luan is a professional clarinetist who has performed as a soloist, orchestral player and chamber musician across the UK and internationally. She is an adjudicator for the British and International Federation of Festivals, and has examined, recorded syllabus repertoire and mentored teachers as part of her former work with ABRSM.

She is Associate Professor in Music Education and a National Teaching Fellow. She holds a PhD, two Masters degrees and several other qualifications in clarinet performance and teaching.
