Having tutored for over five years at all different levels I have come to understand that the perfect tutoring set up looks different for each student, and so my sessions depend on the learning styles of the student.
When beginning tutoring a new student I take time to discuss the student's learning goals and we work on a rough plan of how we will achieve those. For each week I will choose a topic with the student, making sure we are steadily working our way through the course whilst also allowing flexibility to focus more on the weaker topics. I will prepare a topic overview and exercises to work through, and depending on the students learning style we will spend more time discussing the topic or working on questions. The overviews will also be catered to the student, whether that means more visuals examples, more contextual explanations or other methods of teaching.
I also set aside time at the end of lessons to review what we've achieved and get feedback, talking through what parts of the lesson the student enjoyed, what they felt they got most out of and what felt like a poor use of time. Through doing this, each lesson is an improvement and better suited to each individual student getting the most out of their learning. I see tutoring as a two way street, the student is learning to enjoy and excel in a subject, and I am learning how to to best aid the student in achieving that.
