I have experience in tutoring due to being a student and having an excellent tutor. It helped me learn what techniques are most effective to recall knowledge and understand core concepts.
As a tutor, I would insure I explain topics in a way that would develop my tutees actual understanding rather than tell them what they should memorise which is what my school teachers told me and it was very ineffective. For example I would use drawings and diagrams and involve my pupil by encouraging them to ask appropriate questions to build their own understanding.
After an initial understanding has been built, it is important to apply the knowledge into practise questions and past papers which we would go through together and I would ask my pupil to practise more past papers between tutor sessions.
I would create an atmosphere that would encourage my pupil to work cooperatively and participate well, making sure they feel comfortable to make it clear when they don’t understand a topic and ask deeper questions to develop their knowledge. I would be patient and adhere the content of my sessions to their ability, by setting achievable targets without making them feel like they are behind.
