I have 3 years of experience tutoring at Tutor Doctor and Explore Learning. I try to make lessons interesting and interactive so students will have learnt something concrete by the end of the lesson and will retain the information. I prioritise learning by doing rather than just listening, as this leads to better retention, so we will write essay paragraphs together to help them learn how to write a good essay, and go over using the Point Evidence Explanation method. I will check their work and tell them how they did and what could be improved next time. We will read passages from the books and poems assigned and analyse them together, I will ask leading questions about what literary techniques are used and what the effect of them is on the underlying themes of the work, or what the author is trying to say basically. We will then use these literary techniques in quotations as evidence, and the points raised by the student to write practice essays, and I will always encourage them to explain the points themselves, giving a few examples so they can get the hang of it. So for example I will point out a literary technique and how the author uses it to convey their main take on the themes of the work, and then show the possible quotation you could use to illustrate that. I really enjoy teaching English as I love reading and writing so hopefully my students will inherit this love of language from me!
