I will be honest and say that maths always starts with understanding what you already know. When working with someone new I will often first ask you to sit an exam paper so I can best tailor my teaching to you.
It is important that I understand that just because I love maths, most people do not. To try and get you involved anyway, I always try to give real world situations where I have needed maths.
For example, I love boats and teach people to drive them so when we are talking about angles or shapes I try to put it into the context of a REAL trip that I would make. This is a win-win, I get to talk about an exciting trip I've had and you get to learn some maths!
Or, if you're an A-Level student struggling with differential equations I can put this in the context of the amount of air we would need if we were to go SCUBA diving down onto an exciting wreck!
This is how I start, however, thats when I then take your hobbies and interests and try to weave in the maths that underlies them! You may not realise it, but I promise you it is everywhere.
We will then go through some examples as they would be seen in an exam paper. This allows us to show our workings and make clear the bits "hidden" within the question. Ultimately, I am here to help you with your exams/qualification/future plans. Maths is always going to be a part of that so why not work together to understand it a bit better.
