Hello I’m Leona! I have travelled and taught English through Poland, in addition to having a university degree in radiotherapy. I love languages and enjoy conversations about language and learning in general! I was born and raised in Ireland and have had the honour of living and travelling throughout Europe.
I like to have conversation based lessons, about topics, subjects or concepts my students want to learn about! I focus on fluency and conversational ability. Then I choose to focus on strong and weak points after a few lessons to help improve fluency. Once fluency is achieved I look into grammar and sentence structure. Normally I also get my students to present a project to me, to which I can mark and grade them on that and provide feedback.
I’ve taught in Poland with this structure and got successful reviews from the company that employed me.
I believe that teaching is a two way street of communication and I actively involve my students in their interests and their ideas for how they want to the lesson to progress. However I do evaluate my approaches based on student level and ability and set targets and goals to be achieved.
I believe that English can be learnt best through conversation and repetition, which is why I prefer to stick to conversation topics that my students like! As humans are more likely to retain and learn information when a genuine interest is held. I have taught students from the ages of 5 years old to 18 years old. But have also taken part in adult group learning also.
