As a current student myself, I’ve picked up on lots of different teaching styles and seen what works best for me compared to my classmates, and how variable every student is. I’ve also done work experience at a primary school (as well as having a younger sibling whom I tutor) so I’m familiar with working with younger children, in particular.
My personal teaching style is based on visual learning to clearly explain different methods to my students so they understand both how and why something works. I would start with easier, enjoyable starter tasks and quick fire questions, towards the beginning of the lesson. Each sessions will have regular recall and revision of past topics, towards maintain proficiency and eventually reach mastery. The session would mainly consist of repetitive practice of a specific area, for example index laws, with increasing difficulty. I would make sure to hone in on certain focus areas which the student might be struggling on and ensure the student feels comfortable with the topic and the teaching. Lessons will either be once or twice a week. I will always check my student has clear understanding of what I’ve taught before moving on, and give manageable workloads and deadlines, both in the sessions and as homework. I will also set occasional assessment style tasks to observe improvement and adapt my customised lessons according to the child’s confidence in each area. I may also coordinate with their in-school learning to increase efficiency. Finally, I promise to do my best to ensure my students feel both challenged by work but also supported by me and comfortable to ask for help whenever they need it.
