Leon Mcpherson

I am an experienced secondary school Maths teacher with 15 years of experience teaching GCSE Mathematics. Throughout my career, I have worked with students of different abilities, confidence levels and learning needs, giving me a strong understanding of the challenges students can face when preparing for their GCSE examinations.

My tutoring approach is based on a simple but highly effective teaching sequence: “I do, We do, You do.”

First, I demonstrate the method clearly, breaking each concept down into manageable steps. I explain not only what students need to do, but also why the method works, helping them develop genuine mathematical understanding rather than relying on memorisation.

We then move to “We do”, where we work through similar questions together. Through targeted questioning and discussion, I identify misconceptions, address gaps in knowledge and develop mathematical reasoning. This collaborative stage also helps students build confidence and become more willing to tackle challenging questions.

Finally, in “You do”, the student applies the method independently. This allows me to assess their understanding, identify areas requiring further development and provide targeted practice where necessary.

My lessons are structured, focused and tailored to the individual student. I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and learning from them. I do not simply provide answers; I help students understand the mathematics behind each problem and develop the skills, resilience and confidence to approach unfamiliar questions independently.

My ultimate goal is to help each student make measurable progress and become a more confident, capable and independent mathematician.
