I have experience as an au pair/live in nanny teaching young children basic English literacy and reading skills. I teach using student led methods and specialise in creative exercises that allow knowledge to be obtained whilst still enjoying learning. In my experience, children who do not enjoy learning English or reading have simply not found a reason to love it. I enjoy coming up with tasks that help children explore the language in a relaxed, no-pressure learning environment, so as to associate the language and learning as a positive experience. I believe that every child has a different learning style, and through understanding this it allows them to absorb the knowledge of the language in a more efficient manner. It is important to tailor lessons to each students individuals needs, and I am always patient whilst finding what works best for the student. My lessons mostly involve evaluating what level the child is on, and assisting with the knowledge and skills they have already learned in school. It is important for children to have a good understanding of basic English before eventually progressing to more complex literacy skills. Therefore, for younger children, lessons include recognising word groups, syllables, and rhyming. I am a big advocate for reading, and encourage students to read even a couple of pages of basic childrens books at least once a day. I will assist with this during our lesson, and point out key difficult words that your child may need more help with. Overall, I endeavour to make lessons enjoyable and exciting, whilst still maintaining a positive learning environment.
