I first determine, with the help of the student, where academic help is needed. For English, I work primarily with reading comprehension with rigorous text levels, writing proficiency using the 4 different writing genres, and grammar proficiency, which is critical when writing essays and taking proficiency/college entrance exams. I have a scope and sequence for each grade level and a list of texts to cover. Writing lessons come from mentor texts. Writing skills are broken down into manageable chunks of learning and practiced with modeling and independent opportunities.
