I have had a lot of experience working with a range of students, including those with SEND needs. Therefore, I believe very strongly in tailoring lessons around the individual student, be it whether they prefer talking through problems, watching a presentation or being quizzed. Every student is different, and it is essential that their teaching should reflect that.
However, all of my teaching is based around the all-important idea that, in order to learn something, you must encode it effectively. This involves using or changing the information in some way in order to better remember it yourself. You have to understand something to remember it, and I employ a lot of methods in order to help with this. This will generally involve me explaining concepts to them in any way that they respond well to, and then using a method (such as quizzes or mind-maps) to help them use the information themselves, encoding it.
I will always start with an introductory meeting so that the student and I can get to know each other a little, and discuss exactly what they want to get from their tutoring (again, each student is different, and so this may vary greatly). Whether it's a better grade on a certain topic, or improving their essay-writing abilities, I'm happy to help with anything. After that, I will make a multi-week lesson plan so that they know what to expect and what they need to do to prepare for the sessions. Of course, they will have a big input into how the lessons are ordered, and what goals they need to achieve by certain dates.
