My lessons are always interactive and dynamic. I spend as little time as possible providing direct instruction in order to optimize work time and hands-on learning. Typically, direct instruction will be about 5-10 minutes, followed by various activities where students can apply their knowledge and build on it in a meaningful way. The format of these activities varies greatly on the age of the student but can consist of things such as games, discussions, projects, and collaborative work.
I like to think of myself - the tutor - as a learner also. I like to do each activity with my students to be able to scaffold their learning. Often times, this means that I am working through the problems and activities with them without knowing the answer just yet. This style of teaching promotes long-term retention as information is stored in the brain in meaningful ways. No one ever remembered anything that they actually did not use in a practical way!
