Lessons are friendly, focused and tailored to each student. In the first session, we discuss your goals (exam grades, composition portfolio, or simply understanding harmony) and do a short diagnostic to see exactly where you are with theory and practical skills. From there, I build a personalised plan so you always know what we are working on and why.
Most lessons combine three elements: explanation, demonstration and guided practice. I explain concepts in clear, simple language, then demonstrate them live at the piano or on your score (for example, how to voice a cadence or shape a modulation). After that, we apply the idea together in short exercises, past-paper questions or your own compositions so that new knowledge turns into real skill.
For exam students (GCSE, A Level, IB, ABRSM/Trinity theory), lessons are closely linked to the syllabus and mark schemes. We use real past questions, do timed practice, and review model answers so you know exactly what examiners look for. For composers and advanced learners, we focus more on analysis of scores and film music, developing your harmonic language, and creating or refining portfolio pieces.
Homework is always purposeful, never random: short written tasks, harmonic drills or composition fragments that connect directly to your goals. I give detailed feedback between lessons, so you can see your progress in your writing and analysis. The atmosphere is encouraging and patient, but I will also challenge you to think deeply and listen actively.
Whether you are a school pupil aiming for top grades, a university student strengthening harmony, or an adult returning to music, lessons are designed to make complex harmony feel logical, creative and enjoyable.
