As an proficient Maths teacher i ensure i do the following before teaching:
(1) I listen to my students on their view about maths
(2) I try to know what topic gets their interest in their current level of mathematics
(3)I listen more to them to know what strategy to apply in teaching them
Then i explain maths to them in a lay man's language trying as much as possible to ensure terminologies used...

Then i explain maths to them in a lay man's language trying as much as possible to ensure terminologies used are easy to relate with by them, i take time explaining each aspect of maths to them referring to textbooks and materials that is useful for their level of learning.
I give them a summary of topics to be treated and let them know my schedule for teaching each of the topics (i come up with a form of syllabus or follow a predefined approve syllabus.
I respect each learners pace and i do as much as can not to judge them by their mistakes, since making mistakes while learning shows the willingness to get better in that subject in question.
