I prefer to use methods that the student prefers, eg if they find powerpoints too passive then a visual summary such as an interactive mind map with images and explanations. Each person is different so in some cases they may find that they do enjoy powerpoints, however active recall will be included in every lesson as well as spaced repetition in order to enhance long term memory encoding. I will also incorporate blurting in which everything the student knows on the lesson focus will be 'blurted' out at the start of the lesson and the end of the lesson, ideally on paper which helps solidify knowledge. I also revisit past lessons or topics for about 5 to 10 minutes at the start, if needed, to ensure spaced repetition is actively being practiced. As a psychology student, each person I tutor will get a personalised study plan as to how I think they would best revise independently and what tactics most suit them and their needs. I focus on a self allocated target grade that can be different from the one set by the students school as I believe individual ambition is the true determining factor to success. As well as content, I discuss tactics needed in the exam, for example how to annotate an unseen extract and how to fully analyse quotes to ensure the student is demonstrating clear and perceptive analysis, in line with the GCSE specification. English Literature and English Language success is measured on confidence in clear writing which can be achieved regardless of the students current level or predicted grade.
