I have taught adults to learn how to read and write and basic maths. By breaking up the lessons and categorising the vocabulary. I repeat the words and everything till it’s understood and clear to everyone, using props, examples, demonstrations if necessary. Give plenty of encouragement.
Same with basic maths, show the potential students how fun the lessons can be by including games, e.g. a version of Countdown. Use demonstrations, give maths problems to be solved and homework. How maths can be applied to everyday life, such as bills, shopping.
The lessons will also be tailored to the student/s’ needs according the level they feel comfortable with.
We’ll talk about why maths is important in life, where it helps with measurements for cooking ingredients for food, the right dosage for medication and be safe. How the economists use maths to analyse the country’s economy.
How to manage money and prioritise which will potentially help to improve logic and problem solving.
Find different ways to make the students understand by mostly repetition, games, plan a regular study time, focus it on an entire chapter or an entire lesson.
Encourage taking breaks.
