During the first session i will get a basic understanding of where your child is at in the school year, what they find easy to understand and what they struggle with. I will usually use a whiteboard and marker or other visual aids as i like to be creative. I will use the I do, We do, You do format where i explain and show a model answer, than walk them through and when they are ready to, try a question on their own to check understanding. If they have really aced a topic if i have a time i may give them a slightly more advanced question to challenge their thinking and truly see how their brain works while processing maths. For more trickier topics there are acronyms or sayings from primary that helped us remember how to tackle things like fractions when multiplying and dividing that i found very useful. I also have a few maths practice resources which your child may or may not be familiar to which i will expect your child to practice in their own time, or perhaps a few practice homework questions which i would review the next lesson incase they are stuck, in which i see that they haven’t yet fully grasped the topic which is always okay because the most important thing is that they understand and are confident. I think visual aids are very useful and helpful with teaching smaller children as it helps them learn to visualise it in a way that will stick in their mind up until secondary where they will use it to build up new skills.
