Before a potential student / and their parent decide if they would like me as a tutor, I would recommend us meeting on teams so we can get to know each other and the student can decide if they would like to work to me. Once a student decides they’d like to work with me, a great place to start is for me to find out their syllabus, so I can get to know what areas they are covering and become familiar with the content of their course. In the first lesson I’d like to find out how the student feels about their areas of study, so I can learn which areas they understand and enjoy, and where they might be struggling, so we can start a lesson plan together to focus on what they would like to cover in more depth. I’m trained in teaching non-formal education and think this is a valuable method of learning, as it’s more fun and enables the brain to take in information in a more engaging way. Part of this non-formal approach would include discussing documentaries, books and plays about the subject matter, as well as real life examples. As Psychology is an essay-based subject and I’m training to be a counsellor, my approach would also involve open conversations about the topics they’re covering, so they can develop strong analytical skills and be able to present the pros and cons of different theories and approaches, so their essay writing becomes more confident and fluid.
