I will structure the course based on the strengths and weaknesses of the student so that we can set realistic goals together. We will start by understanding the curriculum or scope of what they need to understand and from there I can start filling any gaps or strengthening foundations of knowledge to build on. I am also happy to help find and create resources they can use by themselves outside of lesson time. Depending on what will help the student most I am happy to focus more on practice questions or talking through theory.
Since the aim is to get them comfortable with the subject I will also aim to build their confidence and help them develop problem solving methods that they can take forward so that the knowledge they learn can be applied in classes and assessments and they will be able to better structure their learning even when they aren't in a tutoring session. Their time is valuable so it is important that they learn to optimise their progress and feel capable to face any challenge that school etc can throw at them.
Since I have studied in Germany and the UK I have an awareness for other education systems and I know how specific curricula can be, so my aim is to understand what the 'on-paper' requirements are so that we can get them out of the way, while we build contextual knowledge and get the student used to asking questions and feeding their curiosity. It is easier to learn things you find interesting so if at all possible my aim is to help find how to make any student interested in the subject so that they replace any feelings of intimidation with motivation!
