My approach is to engage first, then the learning is easier! I keep a balance of making a lesson fun, but use a range of 'formal' resources as well. This could be work sheets, past exam papers, power points or on line learning sites.
I have found with experience, ( 14 years teaching, with previous experience in sales and catering) the people I work with prefer a relaxed approach, but but my solid core of knowledge is always at the heart of my teaching.
My lessons are ' student led' which means I am guided by the learner. I have a LOT of patience and am happy to re trace any area which a student finds challenging. I will always complete an initial assessment first, to find the correct level and spot learning gaps.
I use zoom currently, and I like the interaction it provides.
When I first work with a student, I like to know a bit about the person I am working with; for example, if a student is interested in fitness, I can relate topics ( such as learning language techniques) to the physical training they may undertake- in other words, practice, and not the expectation you can lift weights straight away, without putting the work in!
I also love how even 19th century fiction can have comparisons to modern life- in other words- I like to find a connection.
Even Shakespeare can be fun once you get past the difference in speech, just by relating it to current affairs.!
