I have helped many people pass their GCSE Maths by not only teaching them the content they will be doing their exam on, but also getting them used to the exam altogether (using past papers to help).
Firstly to see how the individual is doing I do 2 things, first I get them to go through their past lessons themselves with me and explain which subjects they struggled on and which they excelled at. Then, I shall put them through a test. Only a small test to see how they are actually doing on everything they have learnt so far and things they may not have learnt as of yet. This pushes the truth forward as some people may bend the truth on how much help they need.
The test will most likely be a past paper of sorts, which I will mark and grade before giving them back to the tutee and slowly walking them through what they have done right and wrong.
This was something I found was the most effective out of all the different ways some people do it. I believe that before I can properly teach someone I need to know where they stand in the knowledge of the classes first.
I will also listen to the tutee on how they learn easiest and best, then going from that I will help to the best of my abilities to help them gain a greater knowledge of Maths whether it be GCSE level or Primary School level.
