I have two year's experience in tutoring high school English, and have experience of working with students across a range of settings and abilities.

I have worked with a number of students who are being homeschooled, but whose parents wanted some extra support in teaching English. Some of my homeschooled students were not following the national curriculum, which meant that I was able to tailor their lessons more specifically to their specific interests. For those who are following the national curriculum, individual tuition means that I am able to target my lessons at the students individual level, keeping learning challenging enough to be interesting without the danger of the students falling behind.

For students who are primarily learning in a school setting but require a little extra help outside of the classroom, I ask my students to keep a journal of the texts and topics they are covering in the classroom, making note of anything they have found challenging each week, and offer tuition which runs alongside that classroom work, helping to fill in any gaps in learning.

I have worked in several schools across Greater Manchester, working as in-class support for students as well as taking small groups of students for additional classes. These lessons tend to be pre-planned by the students' classroom teacher and delivered at a pace that ensures the students' learning is secure before rushing forward with the next topic.

Many of my students have had SEND so I am very sensitive to the range of needs that can come from this; not just in terms of learning ability, but setting preferences, attention span, the time it takes to build trust, preferences in address and presentation. (For example, I have worked with students who could not stand the smell of perfume and would ensure I never wore perfume when teaching them). Things like that can seem irrelevant to some people, but I am aware of the difference it can make to someone's learning, when they are not being distracted by such things.
