My major has been psychology, so I find the human-centric approach of teaching more efficient for me. "I need to know you before I can teach you".
I am curious about why you make mistakes and how you make successes. By facilitating your most efficient learning strategy and avoiding your shortcomings, more growth/higher marks will occur.
So this apply for finding ways to remember vocabularies, to define psychological terms, to do casual talks in Chinese, talk about folklores and address it back to teaching aim of the day. Those will be the key of building deep level understanding and learning, in my humble opinion.
