Jamila Jooste

As a university student and bilingual speaker of fluent English and Afrikaans, I bring both academic strength and personal understanding to my English tutoring. Having learned and used more than one language myself, I know that learning a new language can sometimes feel intimidating or frustrating, and I am very patient and supportive when guiding students through this process. My experience as an English reading mentor for children aged 12–14 has given me strong foundations in teaching, as I worked closely with learners to improve their reading, comprehension, and confidence. This role helped me develop the ability to explain concepts clearly, adapt to different learning speeds, and encourage students in a positive and motivating way. I also have extensive experience working with children through childcare roles, which has strengthened my communication skills and taught me how to create a safe, friendly, and engaging learning environment.
My teaching style is calm, encouraging, and learner-focused. I believe students learn best when they feel comfortable and confident, so my lessons are designed to be supportive and interactive rather than pressured or overwhelming. I tailor each lesson to the student’s level, goals, and interests, whether that is improving conversation skills, building vocabulary, strengthening grammar, or developing reading and pronunciation. Lessons typically include a warm-up conversation, guided practice through structured activities, and opportunities for students to use English naturally through speaking, reading, or simple writing tasks. I also provide gentle corrections and clear explanations to help students understand their mistakes and learn from them.
Overall, my lessons are well-structured but relaxed, engaging, and confidence-building. I aim to create a positive learning experience where students feel encouraged to ask questions, make progress at their own pace, and enjoy learning English while developing real-life communication skills they can use every day.
