I have consistently helped a few of my friends who were less proficient in maths with homework and studies, by slowly going through the basics to ensure they truly understand the fundamentals. I myself struggle to remember content if I do not understand the processes going on behind it, and have found this to be the case with others as well. Some areas however do simply require repetition and memorization for the purpose of exams, and I have experience testing myself and others on this as well.
My mother is also a maths teacher, so I have lots of direct experience with my own personal tutor and understand what works best. In my A level studies, I experienced first hand the frustration with stagnation and consistent mistakes, being in a class with especially talented mathematicians for their age. However, by the time exams arrived, I had developed the fundamentals to the point of scoring on par with these classmates (and was the only one to score 100% in my mechanics paper!). I credit this largely to my teacher, who was patient and encouraging, and I hope to emulate his teaching tyle in my own sessions.
