James Whiston

My lessons are designed to be practical, interactive, and focused on building confidence through problem-solving rather than simply working through textbooks. I believe students learn best by applying knowledge to questions and developing the skills needed to tackle unfamiliar problems independently.

I hold a Master's degree in Chemistry and a PhD from the University of Warwick, where my research focused on sustainable ironmaking and materials science. My academic and professional background has given me a strong foundation in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Engineering, as well as extensive experience explaining complex concepts in a clear and accessible way.

During lessons, I typically begin with a brief review of the key theory before moving quickly into worked examples and exam style questions. This allows students to identify gaps in their understanding and gain confidence applying their knowledge. I encourage students to explain their thinking, ask questions, and develop effective problem solving strategies rather than simply memorising facts.

Lessons are tailored to each student's needs, whether they are preparing for GCSEs, A-Levels, university assessments, or simply looking to strengthen their understanding of a particular topic. I can provide support with exam technique, revision planning, past paper practice, and tackling challenging concepts.

My aim is to create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions, and developing the confidence needed to achieve their academic goals. By focusing on understanding and application, I help students build skills that will benefit them not only in exams but throughout their future studies.
