I have experience tutoring ages 11-16 over the past 2 years. These were all people that I knew through Facebook or were my younger sisters' friends. I have an A* in A-level maths and am currently studying PPE at university which has mathematical elements to it. I also achieved a 9 in GCSE maths. My past 3 students have all attained 8s or 7s having been predicted 6s and I had another student who went from a 4 to a 6 predicted however they are still doing their GCSEs. I try to offer alternative methods which may suit the tutee better or may be faster and easier to remember. It's important that students not only understand how to solve a problem but why the solution works and so I try to help them understand not just what they need to pass but also the underlying fundamentals of maths which will allow them to solve problems on their own in the future as they are able to come up with their own solutions. I focus on algebra to help illustrate solutions to problems as this also builds skills they will need later in their mathematical education. I work online outside of work hours as I still attend university. This can be through Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Houseparty and all that students need is a working microphone and their normal maths stationary to learn. I try to also establish a personal connection with my students especially the ones who don't enjoy maths as much as they could as this makes it easier to convince them to work when its needed.
