Lessons will be catered to the needs and learning preferences of the students but as a general plan each lesson would start with outlining the goal for the lesson. Clearly stating the lesson objective means we have criteria to judge whether the student has achieved the goal for the lesson. This helps with the planning of the future lessons so I can ensure all concepts are fully grasped and no areas of any syllabus are left untouched. Throughout my tutoring career I’ve found the concept of marginal gains to be most important when learning. Rome wasn’t built in a day and similarly a student won’t become a great mathematician or economist after one lesson. However, if they leave every lesson with more knowledge than when they started said lesson, and repeat this over or 12 weeks etc then they will soon gain a truly comprehensive understanding of their subject. Combining marginal gain theorem with appropriate praise and celebration of the student’s learning leads to the best environment for helping students achieve, and even exceed, their goals!
