My preferred method of teaching is to reflect on a student's previous work and consolidate what they have already been exposed to before attempting to learn completely new topics, this can be done through previous classroom work or previous examinations completed. Once I know what topic(s) I plan to discuss during a lesson, I take some time to prepare a step-by-step breakdown of the topic in advance, and create a pdf document to use as a guide during the lesson. Once the lesson is complete, the student receives a copy of the document via email, so that they have access to the resources to use at their own leisure for future studies.
I strive to make my students feel comfortable during our lessons, and implore them to please ask me about any questions they have with what we are discussing. I want to stress that this is not simply another classroom lesson with a teacher talking for an hour, and that the more that a student asks me questions during a lesson, the better I can understand their needs and specialise future lessons better, which allows them to gain more from the tutoring. However, I also understand the anxiety that some students may face with a new tutor, so I also let them know that there is no expectation for them to speak should they not wish to - I want my students to feel as comfortable as possible, and know that each student will have unique preferences on how to achieve this.
