My primary area of focus is remedial support - taking struggling students who need foundational aid, and instilling in them the core principals of English. However, I also have a history of working over extended periods alongside classroom study, to support knowledge-integration and catch any potential pitfalls.
Areas Covered: Modern and Classic Poetry, Classical Shakespeare, Modern Prose, and Modern Drama.
Exam boards taught: AQA and Pearson International.
My style revolves around forging a personal relationship with the student, first determining their desired objectives and then identifying what I believe to be a priority, before then going on to cover specialised context together in-session. I offer an introductory session to both meet the student and also highlight any initial objectives going forward.
After this, I will work with a student based on their ability and our objectives - potentially covering ground level concepts, working through schoolwork or homework together, and going over past papers. For more independent students I prefer to mark attempted exam questions and then explore these in session, as self-study highlights potentially hidden knowledge or style gaps.
What our sessions will consist of depends on the objectives of a student, the timeframe we work in, and any suggestions I may have from my own experience.
I specifically work alongside a student in an advisory and supporting position - I do not teach new concepts, but ones covered by the student already or in the exam board rubric. I will happily advise on objectives and goals, and adapt my lessons to fit them, but do not create personalised study plans to take away.
I no longer have access to the most recent study books or text books, but do have past papers and older material. If possible, students should bring their own copies of books and material.
