Each tutoring session begins with a brief discussion to identify the topic the student wants or needs to focus on - this could be a specific area like memory, attachment, or research methods. I’ll then ask a few quick questions or review previous work to assess the student’s current knowledge level and clarify any misconceptions. Based on this, we’ll set key goals for the lesson, such as understanding a specific theory, applying a concept to an exam question, or improving essay structure.

To start, we’ll create a mind map or visual summary of the core knowledge: key terms, studies, theorists, and evaluative points. This helps build a strong foundation and encourages active recall. We then move into application tasks, such as short multiple-choice questions to reinforce learning, or essay planning exercises where the student identifies how to approach different question types (e.g. "Describe and evaluate..." or "Discuss the role of...").

To develop exam writing skills, we’ll focus on writing a strong PEEL paragraph (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link), using a past exam question or theme from the topic. I provide guided feedback as the student writes, helping them refine their analytical and evaluative points.

We end each session with a quick recap, highlighting strengths and setting a target for next time, whether it’s reviewing a tricky topic or practicing another paragraph. This structured yet flexible approach helps build both confidence and exam-ready skills.
