Utilising art such as films, theatre and poetry is effective in developing vocabulary, therefore I attempt to incorporate these crafts into my teaching. For example, while teaching in Malaysia my class and I wrote a choral speaking poem. We then spent time rehearsing it and performed it for other schoolmates to watch.
I use tasks and assessments to measure the progress of pupils. For example, when studying speaking I may incorporate writing and have the students with a script or role play and later perform it. Given that English grammar can be difficult I tend to focus on this with more proficient students. This is to ovoid overcorrection hindering my students. I want my students to appreciate the communicative pleasures of understanding a foreign language first!
