As I have been a tutor for some years, I have gained an understanding of the uniqueness of each student, as well as the need for a tutor who is patience, empathetic, consistent, has great communication skills, reliable, professional but warm, can give feedback, a motivator, and good listener.

This is why I have tailored my lessons to use both theoretical and practical methods. On one day, we would build on vocabulary and use those new words to construct sentences in our daily lives. It is at this point that we also begin to discuss grammar and sentence structure. On a different day, role-play sessions will be included where a real-life scenario is presented. In the case of a supermarket worker and a customer, the student can pick one role and practice speaking to me as this conversation is very practical to the kind of situation they would find themself in at a point.

In the event that this student is preparing for career development or an international university experience, we would now bring an awareness of formal versus informal speech. This helps with professionalism. It is important to note that cultural differences come into play here so what may be acceptable in a student's culture may not be acceptable in the English culture or when interacting in English.

At the end of the day, the student's goal must be achieved, and the learning experience should be a memorable one.
