As a law student, my method of teaching young learners is straightforward in that I make English sound enjoyable rather than like a task. I provide instruction for children in nurseries and at the primary level, concentrating on establishing a solid base in areas such as phonics, vocabulary, reading confidence, and basic grammar, in a manner that keeps them interested rather than overwhelming.
Children at this stage learn most effectively by means of repetition, encouragement and a little play. My lessons are interactive since we make use of stories, simple games, pictures and a lot of speaking practice so that learning English becomes natural rather than compulsory. I make my instructions brief and clear and continually alter the speed according to how the child is responding—on some days we go at a fast pace while on other days we slow right down, and that is entirely acceptable.
I am naturally patient and understand that young children only really want to continue learning if they are in a calm and encouraging environment. Mistakes are seen as a normal aspect of the process and are never something for which children should be embarrassed. The aim is that each child should feel a bit more confident at the end of each lesson than when they began, not just a bit more "taught."
I also keep the parents informed — after each lesson I send a brief update outlining the material we have covered and some minor points to reinforce at home, so that progress isn't confined to the one hour we spend together.
No matter whether your child is just beginning to build up their vocabulary or is working on the basics of reading and writing, I'll adjust each session to match their pace, their interests, and the things that actually keep them motivated to carry on.
