Throughout my teaching career, Mathematics has been a very touchy subject to handle, not because it is difficult, but because of the phobia that surrounds it.
The first thing I always do is to instil confidence and assure the pupil that, Mathematics can be as simple as any subject, if not simpler, depending on the manner of approach.
Secondly, we work on our approach, developing the course outline gradually. I don't like forcing my ideas on the pupil as it might scare them, instead, I allow them to sometimes lead telling me what they understood and we work from there.
