The goal is to improve not only the student's objective English knowledge, but also his/her subjective skills and confidence using the language. Thus, it is important that the lessons are carried out entirely in the target language (English) even if the student and I share a second language in common.
I want to encourage the student to speak and express him/herself in the way that feels most natural and discuss the topics that are close the student's heart.
An important part of the process is to have harmonious conversations with the student about their topics of interest, whatever that may be. For example, we discuss the matters of the student's job, education, hobbies, favorite movie, recent public events, etc.
Some students might desire to learn conventionally, through the understanding of fundamental grammar, sentence structure, and lexicon.
For all of the aforementioned we shall use a variety of online resources and websites, as well as book and video recommendations.
As for my experience, I have grown up speaking English and my scientific education was English-based as well. I utilize all my previous experience and knowledge to give the most benefit to my students. Some of my students have been tech professionals, pharmaceutical professionals, and consultants. Others were university students, mothers, fathers, and blue collar workers. For each and every one of them I found the right approach and formulated the lessons in a way that they received the benefits they desired and were able in the end to transfer my teaching to optimize their professional and personal lives.
