I am passionate about numbers and I want to inspire others to be as passionate about maths as I am. As someone who studied Engineering at University I have seen the power that Mathematics has when applied to the real world. I want to other people to appreciate what Maths can do for them in which ever field they go on to later study.
I believe in a fundamentals first approach. In the topics I teach, I like to ground the students/pupils in a solid foundation of core skills and knowledge, and then build a house of learning on top. During lessons I use different teaching methods, including verbal, written and visual methods. I also like to engage in discussions with the pupils/students because I know that an active learning approach is superior to a passive listening and absorbing of the material. Active learning would include: classroom discussions about different topics, assigning work and tasks for students to do independently (either during lessons or at home) and assigning students to teach the subject they have learnt to me or another student so that they show completely comprehension of the subject matter. As I will be teaching Year 9 and up, the content of my lessons would focus on GCSE Maths and A level maths, depending on the age of the pupil/student. This will be both the content of the curriculum, but also techniques on how to maximise marks achieved during exams, so that pupil/students will achieve the highest grade possible.
