In our first meeting, I would like to take into account a students personal struggles within the subject and strengths. But also (in some cases) give a mini test to see how a student approaches questions and find a suitable way to engage them to be able to help them to the best of my ability.
When it comes to subjects like maths, I believe lots of practise is the way to improve grades. I will set homework (not a significant amount, but enough) to see if the way I have taught has helped. If not, finding other approaches to help.
Also, making sure I know what exam boards look for in exams (e.g. English Literature and Language) making sure students know what they need in order to have a main basis for their responses.
