My lessons are structured and tailored to each student's individual goals. I take a fairly traditional approach to teaching languages, with a strong emphasis on building a secure understanding of grammar and vocabulary being formed by and whilst applying these skills to translation and literary analysis. From my own experience, I have found that a solid grounding in the fundamentals gives students the confidence to tackle even the most challenging texts.

A typical lesson will combine explanation of new material with plenty of guided practice, but I believe that the best way to learn a classical language is by reading it and dealing with it from the very start. For that reason, I place a strong emphasis on working through genuine Latin or Greek passages that are appropriate to each student's level, helping them develop fluency, confidence, and an instinctive feel for the language. Alongside this, we'll review exam-style questions, identify areas for improvement, and develop effective exam technique so that you're well prepared for assessments.

The format of my lessons is inspired by the Cambridge supervision system, wherein sessions are highly interactive, with students encouraged to explain their reasoning, ask questions, and work through problems together rather than simply being given the answers. I believe this develops a much deeper understanding of the language and helps students become more confident and independent learners.

Materials and texts will be taken from both exam syllabi, as well as the general corpora of both languages, depending on what each individual student is looking for.
