I have been teaching students of 14years and above for twenty years at Nigeria College of Aviation Technology, Zaria, Nigeria.
The method of instruction is Performance/Competence Based Training employing delivery in modules with PowerPoint presentation containing enough illustrations to keep the students attentive. This is achieved by drawing up Modular plans for each learning module.
Students are given practical examples and evaluated through Progress and Mastery Tests for each module covered.
These are scored and discussed with the students/ pupils and recorded.
Students/pupils are encouraged to ask questions about the on-going module/ lesson and the Teacher is expected to respond immediately or later, for effective class management, if the answer is known to him/ her. Students/pupils are given enough home work/assignments and these are also scored and may form part of Continuous Assessment.
For Primary school Pupils, the approach will require sufficient illustrations in line with the curriculum/syllabus. Each child will need to demonstrate understanding and ability to solve sample exercises of every learning module, in a friendly atmosphere that should build their interest and confidence. Carefully selected examples from the you tube may be displayed to enrich pupils' understanding and get them to gradually find fun in using their tabs/ other devices to regularly solve/research mathematics.
Challenged pupils/students are paired/grouped with the students that are faster in understanding the topics and assigned tasks to instill more confidence.
Above all supervision and guidance by more experienced Mathematics tutors and access to relevant materials, documents, and other standards and measurement information will be of great value.
