Each lesson is catered to the specific needs of the student. I will always begin the lesson with a few minutes spent chatting with the student to gauge how they are feeling, and to ensure that I have an awareness of their interests to help build a rapport. To introduce the content of the lesson I will state our objectives and give an outline of the different stages that the lesson will move through.

Depending on the age and level of the student, we will do different things. For a primary school student, we will focus on fundamental skills for comprehension, SPaG and creative writing. If working towards entrance exams or the 11 plus, we will work through past papers too.

I will operate through similar content for years 7-9 of secondary school, but will increase the difficulty of the texts we work with accordingly. If they have not been introduced already, I will begin to show them some Shakespeare and some canonical literature to prepare them for GCSE level.

At GCSE level, I will focus on the texts and question styles detailed in the exam board specification. We will work through past papers, familiarising the student with the style of questions asked in the English language papers and how to approach them. We will analyse and examine the texts on the literature syllabus, and I will specific paragraph and essay structure to ensure they are able to perform highly in relation to the mark schemes of different exam boards.

I will always check in with the students and adapt the lessons as and when, to ensure that each student is comfortable, happy and optimising their lesson time.
