Ellen Crofton

For about 6 years, I have tutored English to a range of students from ages 8 up to 18. I have focused on various aspects across the years such as structuring essays, exams, reading, vocabulary, coursework, and general mentoring. I have experience as an ASN teaching assistant and in tutoring students with additional educational needs. As such I am aware of the difficulties that some students or parents can face with the school learning structure; I aim to create a bridge between the expectations from the school and the student’s educational needs. I am familiar with a range of curriculums, different exam procedures, and varied approaches to learning. Throughout my tutoring career I have ensured that I maintain a gentle, dedicated, patient, adaptable, and open approach.

I have made sure to maintain up-to-date knowledge and training. I have participated in several training courses such as:

As I am currently based in Scotland, my main focus over recent years has been SQA English and SQA Art and Design at Nat 5 and Higher level. I also have a strong knowledge of the Edexcel, IGCSE Edexcel, and AQA English exam boards.

With regards to English, I can cover general essay writing, historical or textual context, themes, character analysis, research methods, language/structure techniques, poetry, plays, prose, coursework, time management for exams, dissertations, and creative writing. For Art subjects I can help with coursework, artist research, analysis, idea planning, and follow-up writing. Depending on the level, I will adapt to the requirements of the exam board or university while also considering the needs of a student.
