As a new entrant to tutoring, I would initially seek to understand the student's needs by referring to their current Math syllabus, reviewing all of the areas that should have already been covered and the areas that need to be covered in the next 3 to 6 months. If the student has upcoming key stage exams I would use both the syllabus and the sample exams as a guide for what needs to be revised with the student beforehand. I would also try to identify any areas of weakness and see if we can address in an observable way over the course of the lessons. Primarily I would be looking for the lessons to be engaging as possible so that the student is motivated to participate, ask follow-up questions, do homework in anticipation of new lessons. I pursue puzzle creation as a hobby and I would be looking to incorporate this into lessons, using puzzle solving as a means of practising new topics as well as something fun and rewarding to do. If the student has any particular interests such as in music or sport, we may seek to use the rules of the music or sport, which the student already understands, to explain certain aspects of lessons or find overlap between what they already know, and what they don't know. Language can also be a very effective way of learning and we could incorporate other both languages and puzzles in order to make the lessons more novel and engaging.
